I was introduced to photography as a young teen through the Air Cadets. A local professional photographer, Les McAuley, me taught me the fundamentals. This has provided a solid grounding on which I have been able to experiment and grow. I enjoyed it so much that I built my own darkroom and started experimenting with black and white photo development. In those years, my favorite pastime was shooting wild flowers with my Minolta 35mm camera and Kodachrome 64 film.
I kept it up as a hobby off and on for almost 40 years. Then, in 2002, my wife made me buy a Sony point and shoot camera so she could use it in her classroom. As I played with the camera, it re-awakened my passion for photography. Finally, in 2005, I bought my first digital SLR, the Canon XT. I have since moved up to the Canon 5D MK II.
I immediately took up my earlier interest in photographing wildlife. I spent many delightful hours at the Riefel Bird Sanctuary in Ladner, BC. After awhile, I decided to try my hand at doing portraits. In 2007, I purchased studio lighting and started developing my skills using family and friends as subjects.
A well known saying is that “a picture is worth a thousand words”. My goal as a photographer is to produce images that tell stories not easily expressed otherwise. I am continually striving to advance the art, so that the end result will delight you and become a treasure for years to come.
